ORGANIZATIONAL OVERVIEW


The Organization
Founded in 1985, The Literary Exchange (LE) is a nonprofit 501 (c)(3) volunteer organization established for the purpose and with the mission of promoting literacy, and the literature and performing arts of women of color, particularly African-Americans.

LE Programs, Events and Publications
  • Quarterly Book Reviews Group discussions focusing on literary works of women of color in person and on-line.
  • Women of Color Writers´ Anthology Opportunities for writers to be published in a special collecfion of works annually.
  • Literary Express A semi- annual ´Paperzine´ featuring poetry, prose and graphic art work focused on the life journeys of women of color.
  • Black Herstory Celebratory performances and films presented during African-American History Month (February).
  • Windows To Freedom A literacy program co-sponsored by LE featuring a resource library and workshops in journaling for the Cook County Correctional Center, Division 4 - Women Detainees.
  • "Have Book Will Travel"
    Group trips for members and friends.
  • Town Hall Meetings Opportunities to share and discuss views, address issues, strategize solutions and publish results regarding how to improve our communities.
  • "ConFest" An annual conference focused on issues relevant to the enhancement of the spiritual, physical, emotional and financial health, and careers of women of color. Also featuring products and services for women.
  • International Women´s Dance An annual celebration and acknowledgement of women held during International Women´s Month (March).
  • "Sistah Share" Semi-annual social gatherings featuring works of guest literary and performing artists.
  • Theater Nights Fundraising events which promotes and financially supports plays with themes related to the interests and experiences of LE membership and their communities.
  • Special Programing Opportunities to collaborate with other organizations as well as businesses in providing services, products or acfivifies that can enhance the life experience and literary works of women of color.
